On Future Internet for Enterprises and Society

Samos, Greece, 6th July 2011

We, the participants of the Samos 2011 Summit on “Future Internet: The Power to Change Society”, being active citizens, members of the academic and industrial communities, members of SMEs and researchers of Future Internet Enterprise Systems, Information Technology and Social Sciences.

Recognising:

that knowledge and innovation are important means for tackling the global economic crisis while also being predominantly a key factor for sustainable economic growth and competitive advantage of enterprises;

that today’s global challenges are complex in nature, characterised by non-linear development, cascade spreading and unpredictability (as seen in financial crisis, volcano ash cloud, epidemic spreading, large-scale blackouts), therefore requiring the collaborative effort of scientists, private and public institutions, and citizens;

the strategic importance of information and communication technologies in dealing with complexity and unpredictability, establishing and ensuring open and competitive economies;

the global context of the development of information society, which necessitates the transcendence of national horizons into transnational collaboration schemes and programmes across disciplines;

Acknowledging:

the European Digital Agenda 2020, which strives to foster information society development and to provide the building blocks for sustainable growth, for all citizens and businesses;

the Innovation Union, that brings innovation forward as the best means of successfully tackling major societal challenges, which are becoming more urgent by the day;

the European Framework Programme for research and innovation, which provides an evolving constitutional agenda for supporting scientific research and pre-competitive industrial development on information and communication technologies, social sciences, energy and environment, education and sustainable development;

the FInES Cluster Position Paper, that summarizes the FInES Cluster vision to ensure that the full potential of the Future Internet is accessible to, relevant for, and put to use by European enterprises including SMEs;

the FInES Position Paper on Orientations for FP8 promoting a European Innovation Partnership for Catalysing the Competitiveness of European Enterprises.

We call upon:

the United Nations, the European Parliament, the European Union Presidency and Council of Ministers, the European Commission, National Governments, international organisations and NGO’s, elected representatives and decision makers within the industry, SMEs and every active citizen

To:

Support research and innovation in the domain of Future Internet systems and services in the factory, in the enterprise and within a connected, inclusive society, in order to empower them in their quest for high quality, ubiquitous digital services and products

Foster collaboration among scientific communities, industry, SMEs and citizens, towards an open, coordinated and effective global business ecosystem

Embrace and apply the results of ICT research and innovation in everyday business, to drastically increase enterprises’ and factories’ prosperity

Endorse and promote the Enterprise Interoperability Science Base development, for cultivating the path towards the identification and solving of problems for enterprises and society

Collaborate towards the further elaboration, adoption and pursue of the Research Challenges of the FInES Cluster Research Roadmap.

In light of the above considerations, we have gathered at the Samos 2011 Summit on “Future Internet: The Power to Change Society”, and now call on all institutions and individuals addressed above, to take decisive steps at global, European, regional and local level, regarding the development and adoption of new and advanced ICT solutions for innovative and competitive enterprises and factories - thereby providing the means for a proper response to the challenges of the future.

The Scope of Samos 2012 Summit on Open Data

Open data provide an unprecedented opportunity for societies to move towards transparency, evidence-based decisions, enhanced cohesion, public engagement and trust. Public sector information may be offered as ”open data” in many forms and through different media: from simple datasets describing traffic or unemployment, to web services linking and mashing information from different sources, to interactive visualization of complex phenomena, to citizen-based data gathering and transmission. This way, new information is made available to scientists, citizens and enterprises for developing and offering value-adding services, thus forming a supply chain around publicly available open data.

In this context, the ENGAGE project (http://www.engage-project.eu ), funded by the European Commission under the e-Infrastructures Programme, aims at the deployment and use of an advanced service infrastructure, incorporating distributed and diverse public sector information resources as well as data curation, semantic annotation and visualisation tools, capable of supporting scientific collaboration and governance-related research from multi-disciplinary scientific communities, while also empowering the deployment of open governmental data towards citizens.

The Samos 2012 Summit on Ope Data is co-organised by the University of Aegean, the Greek Interoperability Centre of the National Technical University of Athens and the ENGAGE eInfrastructures project, managed by European Commission, in order to foster international cooperation and strive for a new research and practice agenda in open data and collaborative governance.

With an emphasis on Open Data and a new partipative governance model for the public sector, the enterprise and within a connected, inclusive society, the Samos Summit will be a first-class opportunity to see, interact with and influence cutting-edge European ICT research projects and initiatives.

The Samos 2012 Summit on Open Data, aims at bringing together policy makers, industry representatives, research and academia to actively interact, share best practices and contribute in shaping the European Union agenda.

Two hotels will host the participants of the Samos 2011 Summit, providing them with the unique Greek atmosphere and hospitality. You can declare your hotel preference upon registration.

Complimentary prices for the Summit Participants:
Single-bed room (1 person): 90 EUR/day, including breakfast and lunch
Double-bed room (2 persons): 120 EUR/day, including breakfast and lunch
Extra cost for each child: 20 EUR/day, including breakfast and lunch

The hotels that have already been pre-booked, are listed below:

Hotel Daphne

The hotel is located in Agios Konstantinos, a picturesque traditional coastal village in the north part of Samos, in a distance of about 1,2km away from the venue and only 200 meters away from the beach.

Aegeon Hotel

The hotel is located in the second largest town of Samos, Karlovassi, in a distance of 1km away from the beach and 10km away from the venue. A bus shuttle will be every day available for the transportation of the Summit Participants to the venue and back.

Lunch

During the Samos Summit, participants will have lunch at the traditional Greek restaurant - "Taverna" - called "Paradisos", where they will taste traditional handmade Greek recipes. At the same Taverna, a "Greek Night" will be organised for all the Summit participants.

Excursions

Two excursions will be especially organised for the participants of the Samos 2011 Summit at a competitive extra cost. If you are interested, you can declare your interest upon registration.

The first excursion will take place on Thursday, 7 July 2011 and includes a complete tour of the island of Samos, as well as a traditional Greek meal in the middle of the day. Bus shuttles will be available for the transportation of the participants from their hotels to the various sights of Samos, to the lucnch venue and back to the hotels. The whole cost of the excursion, including lunch cost, any sightseeing tickets and transportation fees, is 35 euros per person.

The second excursion will take place on Friday, 8 July 2011 and includes a visit to Ephessus, which was an Ancient Greek city, located on the west coast of Asia Minor. Participants will also have the unique opportunity to visit the famous Library of Celsus, an ancient building that constitutes one of the few remaining examples of an ancient Roman-influenced library. The whole cost for this visit is 70 euros per person and includes bus shuttle from the hotel to Kousantassi, boat and english guide fees, Ephessus Archaelogocial Sight tickets, lunch and bus shuttle back to Samos
